There is no arguing that the world needs clean energy. This argument is perhaps even more convincing than saying that clean energy is the future, or that the future needs clean energy. The world simply needs clean energy, period.
In this issue MEGAWHAT has two major stories focusing on clean energy – one on a concerted effort by major and emerging economies to steer the world towards realising alternative sources of energy to the fullest, the other on one economy’s advancement on solar power production.
A number of world experts recently gathered in Abu Dhabi for the fourth annual World Future Energy Summit, where they took turns in telling the world how important it is to have a clean energy revolution.
“Our challenge is transformation; we need a global clean energy revolution, a revolution that makes energy available and affordable for all,” said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon (please see the “Highlight” section). “We need to get our priorities right, but we are on the brink of an exciting sustainable future – clean energy for all.”
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Abu Dhabi weeks before the WFES and made a pitch on clean energy, praising the UAE for its cleantech initiative (please see the “Station” section). “We believe that the work being done here at Masdar has the potential to solve some of the most urgent challenges facing our planet,” she said of the Middle East’s first research institute dedicated to innovations in clean energy and located at Abu Dhabi’s Madar City.
The cover story (“Front Page”) talks about the Taiwanese companies’ ongoing efforts in pioneering the massive production of solar energy. In fact, major firms in Taiwan have been producing photovoltaic devices for their partners in mainland China, whose bulk of orders come from the West. Here it goes: “when Chinese companies gain massive orders from the West, their Taiwanese partners provide sufficient upstream materials, then produce high-quality PV devices, which are then shipped to customers”.
MEGAWHAT hopes you will enjoy reading the other stories and find them valuable as you go about fulfilling your professional endeavours. Your favourite bi-monthly read is confident of your continuous support as it assumes a new editorship starting from the next issue.
All the best,
