Masdar Institute and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in the UK have announced a joint research fund of one million pounds for renewable energy policy research.
Dr John Perkins, Provost, Masdar Institute, said, “We are excited by the potential of our new relationship with DECC and the leading thinkers, researchers and officials working in renewable energy policy in the UK.” Perkins added that a key part of the initiative would be to help realise ideas in the market, while working with small and medium businesses in both the UK and UAE, so as to establish a thriving renewable energy sector in the two countries.
Masdar Institute and DECC also launched a partnership made up of government bodies and private companies to be directed and hosted by the Masdar Institute. Earth Capital Partners, a London-based sustainable financier, estimated the potential investment opportunity for the private sector to reach two billion pounds. Ed Milliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change for the United Kingdom, described the two new partnerships as “exactly the type of global collaborative effort” that must be encouraged to face up to the climate change challenge.
